Silver is about a seventieth the price of gold, so to hold any real money in it you need a lot of it. That is why silver bars run much bigger than gold bars, and why a serious silver stack eventually needs a stronger shelf.
A 1 oz silver bar weighs 31.1 grams. A 10 oz bar weighs 0.69 pounds, a kilo bar 2.2 pounds, and a 100 oz bar 6.86 pounds (3.11 kilograms). The big bars that banks and exchanges trade weigh about 1,000 troy ounces, roughly 68.6 pounds, and each holds anywhere from 750 to 1,100 ounces. At $54.05 an ounce (October 24, 2026), a 100 oz bar held $5,405 of silver and a 1,000 oz bar about $54,050.

How much does a 100 oz silver bar weigh, and how big is it?
A 100 oz bar weighs 6.86 pounds, a little less than a gallon of milk’s 8.6. Silver is about ten and a half times as dense as water, so the bar takes up only about 300 cubic centimeters, roughly 18 cubic inches: about two and a half sticks of butter. The exact shape depends on the maker, and cast 100 oz bars are usually longer and lumpier than minted ones.
The 100 oz bar is the most popular large size with individual buyers, because it carries one of the lowest premiums per ounce. Over June 2025 to October 2026, the lowest price tracked each month by FindBullionPrices for a 100 oz bar ran from 0.86% under spot to 3.53% over.
The 1,000-ounce bar: what banks and exchanges trade
The silver that changes hands between banks in London is held as London Good Delivery bars: each between 750 and 1,100 troy ounces, at least 99.9% silver, made by an approved refiner, and stamped with the refiner’s mark, a serial number, its fineness and its exact weight. In practice most weigh close to 1,000 ounces, about 68.6 pounds, which is roughly what an average 10-year-old weighs. COMEX silver futures in New York are delivered in similar bars, five to a contract of 5,000 ounces.
London’s vaults held about 28,985 tonnes of silver in early October 2026, some 932 million ounces in about 966,000 bars. Laid end to end, at roughly a foot each, they would stretch about 180 miles.
Cast vs minted silver bars
A cast bar is poured from molten silver into a mold and cooled, which leaves a rough, sometimes wavy surface and slightly rounded edges. Cast bars are cheaper to make, so they usually carry a lower premium. A minted bar is cut from a rolled sheet and struck in a press, like a coin: sharp edges, a mirror or frosted design, and often a sealed card. Minted bars cost a little more and are easier to stack neatly. Both hold exactly the silver stamped on them.
A few older bars, such as Engelhard and Johnson Matthey bars, sell for more than newer ones because collectors like them. That extra is a collector premium, not more silver.
Which size makes sense?
This is a trade-off rather than a right answer. Small bars and coins cost more per ounce, because making and shipping a 1 oz piece costs almost as much as a 100 oz one, but you can sell them a few at a time. A 100 oz or kilo bar costs less per ounce, but you have to sell the whole thing at once, and some buyers test large bars before paying. Our guide to premiums over spot shows how the cost per ounce falls as bars get bigger, and the premium calculator works out the round trip for any price.
Silver bars at Costco
Costco has sold 10 oz and 100 oz silver bars online to members, and since 2026 a Kirkland Signature 1 oz bar in packs of five, with a limit of one 100 oz bar per 24 hours in September and October 2026. The Costco calculator works out the real price after the Executive reward and card cash back.
Fake silver bars
Bars are easier to fake than coins because there is no single official design. Weigh and measure a bar against the maker’s specifications, try the magnet test (silver isn’t magnetic), and listen for the ring. Our guide to telling if silver is real covers each test, and which ones fool people.
Outside the US
- United Kingdom: silver bars carry 20% VAT, unlike investment gold, so a bar bought in Britain starts a fifth above the price of the silver in it.
- European Union: silver bars carry VAT at each country’s standard rate, so many European buyers choose kilo bars held in a bonded vault, where VAT isn’t charged while the bar stays there.
- Canada and Australia: silver bars of high enough purity in investment form are GST-free.
- Kilo bars are the common large size in Europe, Asia and Australia, where people buy in grams and kilos; the 100 oz bar is mostly an American size.
