Put it on one side of a scale and it balances against about 31 dollar bills, since each weighs about a gram. The gold is worth about 129 times that pile, which is why nobody pays for gold with a wheelbarrow of ones.

How this is worked out

  1. 1. Every unit is defined in grains, and a grain is exactly 0.06479891 grams. A troy ounce is 480 grains (31.1034768 g), a pennyweight 24 grains (1.55517384 g), a tola 180 grains (11.6638038 g), and a troy pound 12 troy ounces (373.2417216 g).
  2. 2. The ordinary (avoirdupois) ounce is exactly 28.349523125 grams and the pound exactly 453.59237 grams. None of these factors ever changes.
  3. 3. Value = troy ounces × the spot price per troy ounce, for pure metal. Spot is the indicative price from gold-api.com, refreshed about every 20 minutes, with a stored fallback of $3,996.90 for gold and $54.05 for silver (Oct 24, 2026). A dealer charges more than spot and pays less.

Values are for pure metal at spot and follow the live price. “Standard” bars are the London Good Delivery sizes the big vaults and central banks hold; each is cast close to, not exactly at, 400 or 1,000 ounces.

The famous gold bar from the films, the one stacked in vaults, is a London Good Delivery bar of about 400 troy ounces. That is roughly 27.4 pounds, or 12.4 kilos: liftable, in the way a bag of dog food is liftable, and worth more than most houses. The standard silver bar is about 1,000 ounces and weighs about 68.6 pounds, which is a two-person job worth far less. Coins and the bars most people buy run from a gram to a kilo. The guide to gold bar sizes covers cast and minted bars, assay cards and why no two vault bars weigh the same.

What is a tola?

A tola is the traditional gold weight of South Asia: 180 grains, or 11.6638 grams, which is exactly three eighths of a troy ounce. It became the base unit of weight in British India in 1833, and the 10-tola bar, 116.64 grams, is still a standard size in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Singapore, the UAE and the other Gulf markets. If a gold price is quoted per tola, divide it by 0.375 to get the price per troy ounce.

What is a pennyweight?

A pennyweight, written dwt, is 24 grains or 1.5552 grams, and 20 of them make a troy ounce. American jewelers and scrap gold buyers still price by it, so an offer “per pennyweight” is about half again what the same offer per gram would look like. To compare, divide a per-pennyweight price by 1.5552 to get the price per gram. The scrap gold calculator takes weights in grams, pennyweight or troy ounces.

Why does a 1-ounce coin weigh more on my kitchen scale?

Because the kitchen scale counts in ordinary ounces, and a troy ounce is 1.097 of them. A 1-ounce silver coin should read about 1.10 oz on a kitchen scale, or 31.1 g with the scale set to grams. The guide to the troy ounce explains why precious metals use their own ounce, and Is My Coin Fake? checks a coin’s weight against the mint’s figure.

Outside the US

The troy ounce is the world’s price unit for gold and silver, so a Maple Leaf in Canada, a Britannia in the UK and a Kangaroo in Australia are all one troy ounce. Day to day, though, most of the world weighs precious metal in grams: jewelers in Europe, Australia, Japan and South Africa quote per gram, and India and the Gulf use grams and tola.
