Costco gold bars: what you really pay after rewards
The warehouse that sells you a 48-pack of toilet paper will also sell you a bar of gold, ship it to your door, and refuse to take either one back.
By Joel Perkes · · US only (costco.com)
Costco sells 1 oz gold bars, gold coins and silver online to members, usually priced 1% to 4% over the spot price. With the Executive membership’s 2% reward and 2% cash back on the Costco Anywhere Visa, a 1 oz bar priced 2.5% over spot ($4,096.82 against gold at $3,996.90, Oct 24, 2026) works out to $3,932.95, about 1.6% under the gold inside. Costco won’t take it back. A dealer paying 97% of spot would give $3,876.99 today. Pick a product below and type the price Costco shows you.

1 × 1 oz gold bar
After rewards, you would pay $3,932.95: 1.6% under the gold inside.
After rewards, Costco sold you the metal for less than spot. Somewhere a bullion dealer just dropped a coffee.
How this is calculated
- 1. You pay Costco = price × quantity × (1 + sales tax).
- 2. Rewards = 2% of the pre-tax price if you’re an Executive member, plus your card’s cash back on the amount charged. Real cost = what you pay − rewards. Both rewards arrive later (the Executive reward once a year, capped at $1,250).
- 3. Metal inside = troy ounces × spot price. A 50 g bar is 50 ÷ 31.1035 = 1.6075 oz. Over spot = what you pay ÷ metal inside − 1, before and after rewards.
- 4. A dealer would pay = metal inside × the percentage you enter. Buy, then sell today = that − real cost. Break-even spot = real cost ÷ (ounces × dealer percentage).
Limits: the example price and dealer percentages are starting points, not quotes; Costco’s price, limits and reward rules change, so check the product page. Rewards depend on your card’s and Costco’s terms. This is arithmetic, not advice.

What Costco sells (October 2026)
- Gold bars: 1 oz bars from PAMP Suisse, Rand Refinery, The Royal Mint, The Perth Mint and Argor-Heraeus, plus 1/2 oz, 50 g and 25 g PAMP bars.
- Gold coins: 1 oz American Gold Eagles and Buffalos, and Canadian Gold Maple Leafs at times.
- Silver: American Silver Eagles in tubes of 20, Britannias, 10 oz and 100 oz bars, and since 2026 a Kirkland Signature 1 oz bar sold in packs of five.
- Platinum: a 1 oz PAMP bar at times (not in the calculator, which covers gold and silver).
It sells them online at costco.com to members only, with free insured FedEx shipping that needs a signature. Items sell out often, and the listing shows the price only while there is stock.
How much is a gold bar at Costco compared with spot?
Usually a little over spot. Reports put Costco’s 1 oz gold bars anywhere from slightly under spot (a Rand bar in May 2025) to about 3.7% over (a PAMP bar in September 2026), with 1% to 2% the most common estimate. On September 26, 2026, three big online dealers charged 2.8% to 4.4% over spot for the same PAMP bar, paid by check or wire, and about 4% more if you paid by card.
Silver costs more over spot than gold, at Costco and everywhere else, because a 1 oz silver coin costs almost as much to make and ship as a gold one but holds about a seventieth of the value. Our guide to premiums over spot explains why.
Do Costco rewards apply to gold? Up to 4% back
Costco’s gold listings advertise “up to 4% in rewards”: the Executive membership’s 2% annual reward, capped at $1,250 a year, plus 2% cash back on costco.com purchases with the Costco Anywhere Visa by Citi. Executive membership costs $65 a year more than Gold Star. Neither reward comes off at checkout; the Executive reward arrives once a year as a certificate.
That 4% is why people talk about buying gold at Costco “for the points.” The arithmetic is in the calculator: on a $4,000 bar, 4% back is about $160, and a dealer buying it back at 3% under spot keeps about $120 of it. The margin is real, thin, and gone if the gold price dips before you sell.
Costco gold bar limits
The limit has changed at least four times: two bars per member at launch in 2023, five in 2024, two per 24 hours from May 16, 2025, and four in early 2026. In September and October 2026, gold listings allowed one transaction of up to four units per membership every 24 hours, and some capped deliveries at eight units a day to one address. Silver Eagles were limited to ten tubes, or one 100 oz bar, per 24 hours.
Can you return Costco gold or sell it back?
No on both. Bullion is one of the few things Costco won’t refund, it isn’t eligible for price adjustments, and Costco doesn’t buy it back. When you sell, a coin shop or bullion dealer usually pays a little under spot for a 1 oz bar: 1% to 5% under, by one 2025 count, and about 3% under at one big online dealer in September 2026. A buyer may test the bar first. Our guide to selling gold and silver compares buyers.
Sales tax and income tax
Most states don’t charge sales tax on bullion, but some do, and the list changes: Washington began taxing it on January 1, 2026, and Maryland restored its exemption for purchases over $1,000 on July 1, 2026. When you sell at a profit, the IRS treats gold and silver as collectibles, taxed at up to 28% if you held them more than a year. The capital gains tax calculator works it out.
Worked examples
- One 1 oz gold bar, Executive member, Costco Visa, no sales tax: $4,096.82 paid, $163.87 back, real cost $3,932.95, against $3,996.90 of gold.
- The same bar without Executive membership: $81.94 back, real cost $4,014.88, about 0.4% over spot.
- A tube of 20 Silver Eagles at 15% over spot ($62.16 each, silver at $54.05): $1,243.20 paid, real cost $1,193.47 with both rewards; a dealer paying 3% over spot would give $1,113.43.
Outside the US
This calculator is for costco.com in the US. Costco Canada also sells gold and silver online, with its own limits (one transaction every four days, up to five units, in October 2026) and the same no-returns rule; enter Canadian prices and a card’s cash back the same way, and read the result in dollars as Canadian. Elsewhere, check your local Costco’s website, and our premium calculator works in your own currency.
Questions people actually ask
Does Costco sell gold bars?
Yes. Costco sells 1 oz gold bars from refiners such as PAMP Suisse and Rand Refinery, smaller gold bars, American Gold Eagles and Buffalos, and silver coins and bars, online at costco.com to members only. Stock comes and goes, and items often show as unavailable.
How much does a gold bar cost at Costco?
Costco prices its 1 oz gold bars close to the spot price, usually about 1% to 4% above it, and the price moves with gold. Reports have ranged from slightly under spot (May 2025) to about 3.7% over (September 2026). The calculator above shows what any price works out to after rewards.
Do you get the 2% Executive reward on gold at Costco?
Costco's gold listings and several 2026 reports say yes: Executive members earn the 2% annual reward on bullion, up to Costco's $1,250 yearly cap, and the Costco Anywhere Visa by Citi pays 2% cash back on costco.com, for up to 4% in all. Both are paid later, not taken off at checkout.
What is the limit on Costco gold bars?
In September and October 2026, gold listings allowed one transaction of up to four units per membership every 24 hours, and some items capped deliveries at eight units a day to one address. Limits have changed several times since 2023, so check the product page.
Can you return gold to Costco or sell it back?
No. Costco's bullion is non-refundable, isn't eligible for price adjustments, and Costco doesn't buy it back. To sell, you go to a coin shop or bullion dealer, which typically pays a little under spot for a 1 oz bar.
Are Costco gold bars worth buying?
That depends on the price on the day and the rewards you get, so the calculator does the arithmetic rather than giving an opinion. With a 2.5% markup and 4% back, a 1 oz bar lands below spot; with a higher markup or no Executive membership it costs about what a dealer charges. Remember you can't return it.
Can you buy gold at Costco in the store?
Mostly no. Costco sells its gold and silver online, shipped by insured FedEx with a signature. Some reports in 2026 said a few warehouses carried the PAMP bar or the Kirkland silver bar, at prices that may differ from the website.
Does Costco sell silver?
Yes, at times: 1 oz American Silver Eagles in tubes of 20, Britannias, 10 oz and 100 oz bars, and since 2026 a Kirkland Signature 1 oz silver bar sold in packs of five. Silver carries a bigger markup per ounce than gold because each small piece costs about as much to make.
Do you pay sales tax on Costco gold?
It depends on your state. Many states exempt bullion, but not all: Washington began taxing bullion on January 1, 2026, and Maryland restored its exemption for purchases over $1,000 on July 1, 2026. Enter your state's rate in the calculator.
Is buying gold at Costco for credit card points worth it?
Only if the rewards beat the round trip. On a $4,000 bar, 4% back is about $160. A dealer buying it back at 3% under spot takes about $120, so the margin is thin and disappears if gold falls, if the markup is higher, or if you don't have both rewards.
