Enter any amount below and the tool draws all three to scale, next to a person, and shows the arithmetic. Money has a size, and we forget it — because almost all of ours is a number on a screen. Ask for it in your hands and it has to come from somewhere, and somebody has to carry it out of the building.

Stacked into a cube, the gold is roughly the size of a can of soda, the cash is about a shoebox and a half, and the silver is about a microwave. A single stack of ten thousand hundred-dollar bills stands 1.09 meters tall.

The carry test

One person can walk out of the building with the gold. The cash too. The silver needs a pallet truck.

Here is the part that surprises people. By weight, hundred-dollar bills are almost as efficient as gold — about $100,000 per kilogram against gold's $128,500. By volume they are thirty times worse, because paper is mostly air. And unlike the gold, somebody can make more of the paper tonight, which is the only difference that ends up mattering.

Look at the middle three rows. A million dollars in dimes, in quarters and in half dollars weighs exactly the same, to the gram. That is not a coincidence: the copper-nickel coins were sized in proportion to their face value, so every dollar of them weighs 22.68 grams whichever way you make change. The penny is the outlier, at 250 grams to the dollar. A million dollars in pennies weighs 250 tonnes, about the same as 180 family cars at 1.4 tonnes apiece, which is a lot of hauling for something that buys one nice house.

The reverse: how much money can you carry?

Pick a weight you could actually lift. Here is what it is worth in each form.

Twenty kilograms is about what an airline lets you put in the hold. Paper money beats silver on weight; coins do not. Gold beats everything.

How this is calculated

  1. 1. Ounces = amount ÷ spot price. One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams, exactly, by definition.
  2. 2. Volume = grams ÷ density. Gold is 19.32 g/cm³; silver is 10.49 g/cm³. Gold is the densest thing most people ever hold, which is why a small brick of it feels wrong in the hand.
  3. 3. Cash = amount ÷ 100 notes. A US note measures 156 × 66.3 × 0.11 mm and weighs about 1 gram — the Bureau of Engraving and Printing says "the approximate weight of a note, regardless of denomination is one gram," so a million in ones would weigh a hundred times more and fill a room.
  4. 4. The cube edge is the cube root of the volume. Bullion is stacked, not poured, so a real pile is a little larger — this is the metal itself, with no air in it.

Spot prices are indicative, refreshed roughly every twenty minutes and stamped with the time they were pulled — not a dealer quote, since what you actually pay carries a premium on top, which is what a bullion premium costs you per ounce. Comparisons to everyday objects are rough by design — a shoebox is not a standard unit. Gold ever mined: 222,600 tonnes, end Q2 2026, World Gold Council.

Sources: spot prices from gold-api.com, with a stored fallback of gold $3,996.90 and silver $54.05 an ounce (October 24, 2026) when the feed does not answer; note weight and size from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing; coin weights from the US Mint coin specifications; above-ground gold from the World Gold Council. Limits: worn coins weigh a little less than new ones, and other countries’ notes are different sizes. Data updated October 2026.

While we are weighing things

Every ounce of gold ever mined — 222,600 tonnes of it, the entire above-ground stock of human history — is worth about $31.3 trillion at the stored price of $3,996.90 an ounce (October 24, 2026).

The US national debt is about $40.3 trillion (Treasury Debt to the Penny, October 1, 2026). There is not enough gold. That is not a prediction or a position; it is a subtraction, and it is the reason the question "what backs the dollar" has the answer it has.

How much does a million dollars weigh in $100 bills?

About 10 kilograms, or 22 pounds. A million dollars is ten thousand hundred-dollar notes, each weighing approximately one gram, so the arithmetic is unusually friendly: ten thousand notes, ten thousand grams, ten kilograms. It fits in a gym bag and a fit adult can carry it up a flight of stairs without stopping.

In volume it is about 11.3 liters — a shoebox and a half. Stacked as a single tower it stands 1.09 meters, roughly to the waist of the person who is about to regret carrying it. The familiar movie briefcase holding ten million dollars is fiction: at 100 kg and 113 liters, ten million in hundreds needs a wheelbarrow and a friend.

How much does a million dollars in gold weigh?

About 7.8 kilograms, or 17.2 pounds — roughly 250 troy ounces at the October 2026 price. That is seven one-kilo bars and a stack of coins, occupying about 403 cubic centimeters. A can of soda holds 330. You could put a million dollars of gold in a coat pocket, if the coat were well made.

This is the property that made gold money in the first place, and it is not sentiment. Portability is one of the handful of things a monetary good has to do: hold value in a form a person can move. Gold packs about $2,500 of value into every cubic centimeter. Nothing else that is also durable, divisible and hard to counterfeit comes close.

Why silver takes up 136 times more room

A million dollars of silver weighs about 575 kilograms — more than half a tonne — and fills about 55 liters. Two things stack against it. Silver is worth roughly 74 times less per ounce than gold, and it is also about half as dense, so you need 74 times the weight and that weight takes up nearly twice the room per gram. Multiply the two and you get 136 times the volume for the same money.

That 74 is the gold-silver ratio, and it is worth knowing where it has been. For most of the bimetallic era it sat near 15 or 16 to one — close to the two metals' relative abundance in the earth's crust, and often fixed by statute. It has spent the modern era far higher. Whether that says something about silver, about gold, or about the currency both are priced in is the argument; the block on the right is what the argument looks like stacked on a floor.

What about a billion dollars?

Multiply everything by a thousand. A billion dollars in hundreds weighs ten tonnes and fills eleven cubic meters — about a third of a shipping container. In gold it is 7.8 tonnes, a cube a little under three quarters of a meter on each side, which two people could not lift but a forklift would not notice. In silver it is 575 tonnes, which is a warehouse problem rather than a safe problem.

Push the slider all the way and you arrive at the number this publication exists to talk about, at which point the cubes stop being furniture and start being architecture. The tool will keep drawing them accurately long after they stop being funny.

Common questions

How much does $1 million in $100 bills weigh?

About 10 kilograms (22 pounds). One million dollars is 10,000 hundred-dollar notes, and every US note weighs approximately one gram regardless of denomination, so 10,000 notes weigh 10,000 grams.

How big is $1 million in cash?

About 11.3 liters, or a shoebox and a half. As one continuous stack, 10,000 notes stand about 1.09 meters (43 inches) tall, since a US note is roughly 0.11 millimeters thick.

How much gold is $1 million?

About 250 troy ounces, or 7.8 kilograms (17.2 pounds), at a gold price of $3,996.90 per ounce recorded on October 24, 2026. That is about 403 cubic centimeters of metal, slightly larger than a can of soda.

How much silver is $1 million, and why is it so much bigger?

About 18,500 troy ounces, or 575 kilograms (1,269 pounds), filling roughly 55 liters. Silver takes up about 136 times the volume of the same value in gold, because it is worth about 74 times less per ounce and is also roughly half as dense.

Is a million dollars in cash heavier than a million dollars in gold?

Yes, but by less than most people expect. Cash weighs about 10 kilograms against gold's 7.8 kilograms. Hundred-dollar bills carry roughly $100,000 per kilogram against gold's $128,500. By volume the gap is much wider: gold holds about thirty times more value per cubic centimeter, because banknotes are mostly air.

How much does a million dollars in $1 bills weigh?

About 1,000 kilograms, or roughly 2,205 pounds. Every US bill weighs about one gram whatever its denomination, so a million single dollar bills is a million grams, about one metric ton.

How much does a billion dollars weigh in $100 bills?

About 10,000 kilograms, roughly 22,000 pounds or 11 US tons. A billion dollars in hundreds is ten million bills at about one gram each.

How much does a million dollars in quarters weigh?

About 22,680 kilograms, or roughly 50,000 pounds, which is 25 US tons. A million dollars is four million quarters, and a modern quarter weighs 5.67 grams.
