Grocery prices then and now: 1980 to today

A dozen eggs cost 84 cents in 1980 and $2.27 in September 2026, and a gallon of regular gas $1.25 then and $4.48 now, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Measured in minutes of work at the average wage, both got cheaper: eggs from 7.4 minutes to 4.2, and gas from 10.9 minutes to 8.3. Pick any year since 1980 and the receipt below rings up the same groceries again, in dollars, in minutes of work or in silver dimes.

How this is worked out

  1. 1. Prices: the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ average prices for the US city average, one series per item, averaged over each calendar year. A year counts only if BLS published at least nine months of it. “Now” is the latest month, September 2026.
  2. 2. Minutes of work = price ÷ that year’s average hourly pay × 60. Pay is average hourly earnings of production and nonsupervisory employees, total private (BLS, series AHETPI); “now” uses 2026 so far, $32.29.
  3. 3. Silver dimes = price ÷ the value of the silver in one pre-1965 dime (0.0723 troy ounces) at that year’s average silver price. “Now” uses today’s spot price, shown on the card.
  4. 4. If BLS has no price for an item in the chosen year, the item is left out of both totals, so the two totals always compare the same groceries.

How much did eggs cost in 1980?

About 84 cents a dozen, on average across 1980, for grade A large eggs. Through the 1980s and 1990s the price barely moved, hovering around a dollar. Then it jumped: $2.86 in 2022, $3.17 in 2024 and $4.25 in 2025, when bird flu outbreaks cut the supply of laying hens, before falling back to $2.27 by September 2026. Eggs are the most dramatic line on the receipt, which is why they make the news.

Coffee has had a similar couple of years: $6.32 a pound in 2024, $8.18 in 2025 and $9.33 in September 2026, triple its 1980 price. Bananas are the quiet one, 34 cents a pound in 1980 and 66 cents now, less than double in more than four decades.

Groceries cost more dollars but fewer minutes. Both are true.

Prices in dollars always go up over decades, because the dollar itself shrinks. The fairer question is how long you have to work to buy the same things. In 1980 the average production and nonsupervisory worker earned $6.85 an hour; in 2026 so far, $32.29. That is 4.7 times as much, and most of the groceries on this receipt rose by less, so in minutes of work the 1980 cart has become cheaper: about 60 minutes of work then for the six items priced in both years, about 38 now.

This is the bear case for my own position, stated plainly: a site about the dollar losing value should admit that, for basic groceries, pay has kept ahead since 1980. It doesn’t hold for everything. Ground beef and coffee have risen faster than pay in recent years, and the house calculator shows the opposite story for homes, which take nearly twice the hours they did in 1970.

The silver dimes are the third measure. Priced in the silver of an old dime, the cart moves surprisingly little across the decades, though the result depends heavily on the year you start from: silver hit a record in 1980 and was cheap through the 1990s. Try 1980 and then 1995 to see the difference.

What this leaves out

These are national averages; your own store and city can be well above or below them. Products change too: package sizes shrink, and a pound of coffee in 1980 was not the same coffee as now. The wage is one national average before tax, and it hides big differences between jobs and places. And eight items are a shopping list, not a cost of living; the dollar value calculator uses the full consumer price index, and the article on whether CPI is accurate explains how the official measure is built.
