What would gold cost if the dollar were backed by gold?

Pick the dollars, pick the gold, and see the price that would make one cover the other. Spoiler: the gold needs a raise.

By Joel Perkes · Data updated November 1, 2026

To back every dollar of M2, about $23.4 trillion, with the US Treasury’s 261.5 million ounces of gold, gold would have to cost about $89,537 an ounce: about 22 times the October 24, 2026 price of $3,996.90. To back only the paper cash in circulation, about $9,501 an ounce. The dollar hasn’t been convertible into gold since 1971, so this is arithmetic, not a forecast. How this is calculated

  1. 1. The price. Gold price per ounce = the dollars backed × the cover ratio ÷ the ounces of gold. It doesn’t use today’s gold price at all.
  2. 2. Compared with today. That price divided by the indicative spot price, refreshed about every 20 minutes.
  3. 3. Gold needed. The dollars backed × the cover ratio ÷ today’s price, in troy ounces of 31.1034768 grams, compared with about 220,700 tonnes ever mined and about 3,671.6 tonnes mined in 2025.

What would gold be worth if the dollar were backed by gold?

It depends entirely on which dollars you count. The price per ounce that would back each measure of US money at 100%:

Read across the M2 row and something surprising appears. All the gold ever mined, about 220,700 tonnes, is worth about $28 trillion at today’s price, more than all of M2. So the world’s gold could cover America’s spending money with some left over. It just can’t cover the national debt: that would take $5,674 an ounce, even with every wedding ring on Earth thrown in.

How much gold does the US have?

The Treasury reports 261,498,926 fine troy ounces, about 8,134 metric tons, the largest official gold reserve in the world. A little more than half of it sits in Fort Knox. On the Treasury’s books it is worth about $11 billion at the official price of $42.2222 an ounce, set in 1973. At the October 24, 2026 market price it is worth about $1.05 trillion, about $3,000 for every American.

What did the gold standard actually back?

Never everything. The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 required the Fed to hold gold worth 40% of the paper notes it issued, not 100%. Congress cut the requirement to 25% in 1945, dropped it for bank deposits in 1965 and for notes in 1968, three years before the gold window closed for good.

Here is the number that surprises people. Apply the 1913 rule to today’s paper cash: 40% of $2.48 trillion, backed by the Treasury’s gold, works out to about $3,800 an ounce, slightly below today’s price. By the old rule for paper money alone, the gold would already cover it. Everything else, the bank deposits, the money funds, the debt, is where the dollars outran the gold.

How much gold backed the dollar in 1971?

When the US stopped paying gold to foreign governments in August 1971, it held about 9,870 tonnes, valued at $35 an ounce. M2 was about $686 billion. To back all of it, gold would have had to cost about $2,162 an ounce, about 62 times the official price. Today the gap is about 22 times. The gap shrank because gold’s price rose faster than the money supply, which is one way of saying the market did the revaluation the Treasury never would. Our article on the Bretton Woods system tells how the gold left.

Could the US go back to the gold standard?

Only by choosing a new fixed price and keeping it. At about $3,997 an ounce the Treasury’s gold covers about 4.5% of M2, so any real gold link would mean a price far above today’s, or covering only part of the money, as the 1913 law did. Then comes the hard part: keeping the promise in a bad year. The US changed its gold promise in 1933, 1934 and 1971, each time in a crisis. Our explainer on fiat money vs the gold standard covers what prices did under each.

A fair objection: this calculator assumes the gold price wouldn’t move on its own if the US announced a gold standard, and it would, probably a lot. The numbers here are the arithmetic of the current pile of dollars against the current pile of gold, not a prediction of what a gold dollar would trade at.

Outside the US

No major currency is backed by gold today. The Swiss franc kept the last legal link among them until a new Swiss currency law took effect in May 2000. Most central banks still hold gold as a reserve, and some, including Germany’s, have moved theirs home; our Fort Knox article has the details.

Could the US go back to the gold standard?

It would have to pick a new fixed gold price far above today's, because at about $3,997 an ounce its gold covers only about 4.5% of M2, and then keep the promise in bad years too. The US suspended or changed its gold promise in 1933, 1934 and 1971.
